Hormones are the body's chemical carriers. They travel through the bloodstream, and are involved in many processes. Some of these processes involve mood regulation - eg, happiness, sadness, anger, or disgust. The hormones that promote positive emotions, such as pleasure and happiness, are called happiness hormones. Happy hormones list Among the many hormones, the following four have been classified as "happy hormones": Endorphins Endorphins are chemicals that the body produces to relieve pain and stress. In general, these hormones are formed in the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. A well-known example of the action of this hormone is the high level of hostility, which one feels after a hard and long exercise. Hence, this hormone is also called the “feel-good” hormone. However, endorphin levels vary from person to person. Oxytocin Oxytocin is often called the "love hormone" because it is generally released through physical contact. This hormone is also essential for breastfeeding and childbirth as well as parent-child bonding. Furthermore, this hormone is shown to enhance trust and empathy in a relationship. This hormone is produced by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Dopamine Dopamine is the chemical responsible for motivation, attention, and memory. It is also necessary to regulate body movements. If this chemical is released in large quantities, it can induce pleasure - motivating the individual to repeat the behavior. In the body, dopamine is stored in several areas of the brain such as the ventral tegmental area and the substantia nigra. Serotonin Serotonin is the hormone responsible for regulating sleep, digestion, appetite, memory and the ability to learn. Furthermore, serotonin is associated with maintaining mood balance. Hence, individuals suffering from depression have been linked to lower levels of serotonin. Boost happy hormones Research has shown that spending time outdoors, in sunlight, boosts serotonin and endorphin levels. Regular exercise increases serotonin and dopamine levels. Laughter is also one of the most effective ways to increase endorphin and dopamine levels Certain foods are also believed to increase levels of the four happiness hormones. Music is also known to increase dopamine levels in our brain. Supplements such as green tea may boost serotonin and dopamine production, however, individuals with underlying health conditions need to consult their physicians before trying other supplements. Important tips: Make sports an essential part of your life because its benefits are so great that some psychiatrists wrote off medications and psychological drugs from treating some of their patients and replaced them with strenuous sports that have wonders in mental health.
